In a distinguished academic atmosphere, Assistant Professor Dr. Wafaa Hussein Salman, Head of the Department of Financial Studies, and Assistant Professor Dr. Hakim Hamoud Falih, a lecturer in the Department of Accounting Studies at the Post-graduate Institute of Accounting and Financial Studies, participated in the discussion of the master’s thesis entitled “The Impact of Disclosure of the Social Dimension of Sustainability on the Relevance of Accounting Information Value – In Light of the Governance of Banks Listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange.” The thesis, specializing in accounting, was presented by Zainab Yahya Askar.

The thesis aimed to investigate the impact of disclosure of sustainable development on the relevance of accounting information in listed Iraqi banks, within a “modified” analytical framework that takes into account the interactive role of corporate governance mechanisms as a moderating variable in the relationship. This study aims to fill a research gap in the Arabic literature, particularly in the Iraqi banking context. To achieve the study’s objectives, the hierarchical multiple regression methodology was employed. This is an appropriate analytical methodology that allows for the introduction of variables in successive stages that reflect theoretical foundations or previous empirical results.

The thesis highlighted the need to require companies listed on the Iraqi Stock Exchange to disclose sustainability performance with financial reports or separately, in a manner that contributes to enhancing company value and reducing the financial constraints faced by companies when attempting to obtain external financing.

The study also highlighted the positive relationship between disclosure of sustainable development activities related to training and qualification, the number of training courses, and the appropriateness of the value of accounting information. It also highlighted the need for companies to adopt corporate governance mechanisms and rules, given their positive and statistically significant impact on the relationship between disclosure of sustainability performance and the appropriateness of the value of accounting information. It also highlighted the need for the Iraqi Stock Exchange to provide a database on sustainability practices and activities for companies listed on the Iraqi stock market, similar to what is provided by global financial markets. This database is available to various stakeholders to assist them in evaluating the financial and non-financial performance of these companies. This will enhance the effectiveness of the stock market’s performance and attract more investment.
